LB State Ends Wildcats' Tourney Run

LONG BEACH, Calif. (December 4, 1998) - No. 1-ranked Long Beach State started slow but finished fast, sweeping the University of Arizona, 15-11, 15-4, 15-6, in a second round NCAA Tournament second round match Friday night at The Pyramid. The 49ers improved their record to 32-0 on the season while the Wildcats ended with a record of 22-7.

Arizona controlled most of game one, leading by scores of 6-1, 8-3 and 10-8. The 49ers forced ties at 10-10 and 11-11 before taking their first lead of the night at 12-11 on a combination block by Misty May and Anja Grabovac. After several sideouts, Brandy Barratt stepped to the service line for the 49ers and served three straight points to end the game, with all three points scored on hitting errors by the Wildcats.

Long Beach State dominated game two, jumping to leads of 6-1 and 7-4. With the 49ers leading 9-4, May, the 1997 AVCA National Player of the Year, served six straight points to give the Beach a 15-4 win. In game two, the 49ers outhit the Wildcats .368 to -.111.

Game three was much of the same, with the 49ers hitting .367 with 13 digs, while the Wildcats hit .216 and had nine digs.

May finished the night with 34 assists and three kills to go with four service aces and seven digs. Arizona was led by Marisa DaLee with 12 kills.
