Arizona Soccer Falls to Loyola Marymount in Overtime

    LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 24) Playing in its fourth overtime game in six matches, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was edged, 3-2, in double overtime by Loyola Marymount in front of a crowd of 340 on Sunday.

    Wildcat junior KRISTI LORONA (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro HS) gave Arizona an early advantage, scoring her second goal of the season after only 50 seconds into the game. The goal was assisted by junior ERIN NELSON (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS).

    Lorona scored Arizona's second goal, with junior TWILA KAUFMAN (Los Angles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) assisting, at the 2:44 mark to extend Arizona's lead, 2-0.

    The Wildcats held the Lions off until late in the game, but Loyola Marymount broke the shutout when junior Erin Fahey dented the net at 87:37. The Lions scored the equalizer with less than a minute remaining in regulation. The two teams played through the first overtime period without scoring. The contest was nine minutes into the second overtime when Loyola Marymount sophomore Tumia Moe notched the game-winning goal.

    Loyola Marymount held the shots advantage over Arizona, 39-5. Lorona had a team-high three shots to lead the Wildcats, while TIFFANY SABADO (Kaneohe, HI/James B. Castle HS) and senior KERI KENNEDY-WEBER (Coto de Caza, CA/Santa Margarita HS) each added one shot. Wildcat junior goalkeeper SHANNON MONTI (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) played all 114 minutes for the UA, tallying 13 saves.

    Arizona drops to 1-6-1 on the year, and Loyola Marymount improves to 6-2-1. The Wildcats return home next weekend to play host to Long Island and Northern Arizona for the Starwoods Plaza Soccer Classic. Arizona will face Long Island on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., and the Cats will take on Northern Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
