WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Arizona junior Jordan Brown has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week, commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Brown’s award marks the third straight week an Arizona player has been named either player or pitcher of the week and the fourth time overall for a Wildcat this season.
Brown led UA to a two-games-to-one series victory over visiting Washington on the opening weekend of Pac-10 play last week. The Wildcats’ first baseman hit .429 (6 for 14) with a team-high seven RBI and five runs scored in the three games. Four of his six hits in the series went for extra bases, including two doubles, a triple and his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
In Friday's come-from-behind 6-5 victory, Brown forced the contest into extra innings after hitting a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 5-5 in the ninth inning. Teammate Jeff Van Houten ended the game with a walk-off home run in the 12th inning.
The weekly honor is the second in Brown’s three-year career and the 44th overall time an Arizona player has been recognized by the conference. Junior Trevor Crowe was named the Feb. 22 Player of the Week, while right-handers Mark Melancon (March 15) and John Meloan (March 22) were named the conference’s top pitcher the last two weeks straight.
Arizona State’s Pat Bresnehan was named this week’s Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week.
Arizona will head out for the first conference road trip of the season to Los Angeles this weekend for a three-game series at UCLA.
