This Week

The Arizona soccer team6-8-1 (1-2-1) comes home to host the No.4 team in the nation, the Stanford Cardinal 10-2-2 (1-1-1) on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.? On Sunday, Oct. 28 the Cats will host the No. 21 California Golden Bears 8-5-0 (0-3) at 1 p.m.? Both games will be played ay Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.

Last Week Recap

Over the weekend, the Cats went 1-0-1in a pair of double-overtime contests.? On Friday, Arizona got its first Pacific-10 victory of the year, defeating Oregon State, 1-0, in double-overtime.

The Cats scored seven minutes into the second overtime when the Jacquelines, Broussard and Zinke, delivered London King the ball inside the goal box for the game winner.? The goal was Kingˇ?s third of the year.

For the third time this year Arizona shutout an opponent, but it was the first for senior goalkeeper Halley Brown, who got the win in her first collegiate start, filling in for the injured Danielle Nicolai.

For the first time this season Arizona won a game in which it scored only once.

Arizona had several opportunities to score during regulation, even though UA was out-shot by Oregon State, 12 to 11, but in the overtimes the Cats were on the attack, with five shots on goal in two overtime periods, led by a pair of shots by Marquez and the game winner by King.

On Sunday, the Cats and Ducks tied, 2-2, in double-overtime.? The Ducks took a 1-0 lead to the half, after a Darcie Gardner goal at the 30:28 mark off a free kick.? Gardnerˇ?s first goal of the season was assisted by Allison Newton and Danielle Sweeny.

The Cats evened the score at 1-1 when London King beat a defender and then the goalkeeper one-on-one for her fourth goal of the year, and second of the road trip, at 50:08. ?Sam Drees was credited with her first assist of the day.

Eight minutes later the Ducks took a 2-1 led with a goal by Teresa Bowns, 25 yards out for her fifth of the year.? Barbara Blocker was credited with the assist.

Analisa Marquez tied the game in the 76th?minute with her second goal of the season, again Drees got the assist.? The score would remain 2-2 through the end of regulation and the two overtimes.

Coach Dan Tobias

Arizona head coach Dan Tobias is in his fifth season at Arizona.? In 2003, Tobias took over a program that in its nine previous seasons had never had a winning record, and soon he had the Wildcats as contenders in both the Pac-10 and national championship picture.? Tobias carries a 46-43-8 overall record with the Wildcats.? He has earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors twice, in 2002, with Washington State and 2004, with Arizona, as well as National Coach of the Year in 2004 by Soccer America.? In 2004 Tobias also received West Region Coach of the Year by Soccer Buzz and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year honors as well.? In 2004 Tobias led UA to its first Pac-10 title and followed that with a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2005.

About the Cardinal

Paul Ratcliffe is in his fifth season on the Cardinal sideline and carries a 48-28-10 (19-11-6) record and has won at least 10 games in each of his previous four seasons in Palo Alto.? Prior to becoming head coach at Stanford, Ratcliffe spent five seasons at Saint Maryˇ?s where he compiled a 55-34-4 record.? Last year, Ratcliffe guided the Cardinal to 15-6-2 overall record and finished third in the Pac-10 with a 6-2-1 record.? The Cardinal are currently 10-2-2 (1-1-1).? Last week, the Cardinal hosted No. 2 UCLA and lost, 2-0 and No. 3 USC, and tied 1-1. ? The Cardinal are ranked No. 4 in both the Coaches Poll and Soccer Buzz Polls and No. 5 in the NSCAA/Adidas Coaches Poll.

The Cardinalˇ?s top goal scorer is senior midfielder Shari Summers with five goals.? Sophomore forward Kelley Oˇ?Hara leads the team in points with 12; four goals and four assists.? Oˇ?Hara is tied for second on the team in goals with freshman midfielder Megan Redman.? To go along with her four goals, Redman also has two assists and 10 points.

Like the Cats, the Cardinal has had three goalkeepers who have seen time in net this year: freshman Kira Maker, junior Alex Gamble and senior Erica Holland.? Last week it was Maker who got the start in goal.? She has allowed 0.91 goals/game average with 19 saves, a and .731 save percentage.? Maker has compiled a 5-2-1 record with two shutouts in her eight starts this season.

The Cardinal hold a 10-2-0 record against Arizona.? Arizonaˇ?s only two win against the Cardinal came in back-to-back years, 2004 when the Cats earned a 1-0 double-overtime win in Palo Alto and in 2005 when the Cats defeated the Cardinal at home 2-1.? Last year, Stanford scored a 3-0 victory over the Cats in Palo Alto. ?

About the Golden Bears

Head coach Neil McGuire is in his first season with the Golden Bears.? Prior to arriving at Berkley McGuire served as head coach at Texas Tech for two seasons.? McGuire has accumulated a 68-76-9 record as a head coach (Texas Tech, Mississippi State, and Iowa Central Community College).? Last year the Golden Bears racked up a 12-5-5 record including a 3-3-3 record which was good sixth in the Pac-10.? This year the Bears are 8-5-0 (0-3-0).? Last week the Bears were defeated twice by then No. 3 USC, 3-0, and then No. 2 UCLA, 2-0.? The Bears are ranked No. 21 in the NSCAA/Adidas Coaches Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll.? The Bears are not ranked in the Soccer Buzz Top-30.

The Golden Bears are led in scoring by freshman forward Alex Morgan.? Morgan has five goals and 10 points on the season.? Senior midfielder/defender Caroline Lea is second on the team in goals with three.? Lea also has an assist to go along with her three goals for a total of seven points.

Last week against No. 2 UCLA redshirt sophomore Rosie Aquilera made her first start in goal for the Bears.? In her two appearances, Aquilera has a 1.62 goal/game average, six saves, and a .750 saves percentage.?

UA has tied the Golden Bears each of the last two seasons.

Against Ranked Opponents

The Cats are 1-3 against ranked opponents this season.? They have defeated No. 4 Texas, 2-0, and lost to No. 10 Virginia, 4-0, No. 2 Santa Clara, 1-0 (2OT) and No. 16 BYU, 1-0.?

Prior to the victory over No. 4 Texas on Sept. 9, the last time the Wildcats won a game against a ranked opponent was 2005, when the Cats defeated No. 25 Utah and No. 21 Stanford.? That was the same year the Cats advanced to the Sweet 16.? The last time the Wildcats defeated an opponent ranked as high as the fourth-ranked Longhorns was Oct. 8, 2004 when the Cats beat No. 4 Washington; the same year the Cat won the Pac-10 title.? Also in 2004 the Wildcats defeated No. 5 UCLA.

Leading the Pac

Sam Drees is tied for fifth with five assists and tied for 10th in assists/game with 0.33 assists/game.? Even though she missed both games this weekend Danielle Nicolai remains tied for second in saves with 49 and saves/game with 3.77 saves/game.? As a team UA ranks second in the Pac-10 in saves with 62 and third in corner kicks with 82.
