TUCSON- The Arizona men's tennis team continued its success on the second day of the ITA West Regional Tournament in Malibu, Calif. Six Wildcats won their singles matches to advance to the third round and two teams advanced to the doubles Quarterfinals.
In singles action, sophomore Jay Goldman defeated Andrew Kells of USC 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the third round. Goldman will face Alex Konigsfeldt of UC Santa Barbara today at 10:45 a.m.
Junior Pat Metham defeated Max Taylor of UC Santa Barbara 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the third round. Metham will face Charl Wolmarans of San Diego today at 10:45 a.m.
Sophomore Andres Carrasco defeated Nils Schive of San Diego 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the third round. Carrasco will face Steven Henderson of UC Irvine today at 10:45 a.m.
Senior Francois VanderMerwe defeated Quoc Doan of UC Riverside 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the third round. VanderMerwe will face Dean Jackson of San Diego today at 12:15 p.m.
Junior Andres Arango defeated Jon Kazarian of UC Irvine 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the third round. Arango will face Ahmed Ismail of UCLA today at 12:15 p.m.
Junior David Humphreys lost his first match to Khunpol Issara of UC Irvine 6-4, 6-2. He rebounded in his second match of the day by beating Chad Rubin of Hawaii 6-4, 6-0. Humphreys will face Robert Zacks of Cal Poly in the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, the duo of Arango/Carrasco defeated Jenson Turner of Pepperdine 8-5. Arango/Carrasco advanced to the doubles Quarterfinals where they will face Amit Inbar and Holden Sequso of ULCA today at 9:00 a.m.
Metham/VanderMerwe defeated Yi Chai/Michael Conroy of UC Riverside 8-3. Then they defeated Bartosz Gomez of San Diego State 8-5. Metham/VanderMerwe will face Dean Jackson/Charl Wolmarans in the doubles Quarterfinals today at 9:00 a.m.
