Quoting Lute Olson . . .
What are your expectations heading into 2005-06?
“It should be a good, solid team. We’ll have a lot of experience and a lot of depth. Out of the 12 scholarship players, we have 10 returning (11 players total for 2005-06). That’s the good news. The bad news is that we lost Salim Stoudamire and Channing Frye. In Stoudamire, we had one the best shooters that we’ve ever had here, and Channing did a great job for us. He just got better and better every year. We feel good about the number of guys we have coming back. They are a year older and should be a year better.”
“I think this team will have a great shot at the Pac-10 title again. It will be the kind of team, because of the competition in practice, that will only get better and better. We’re excited about the year.”
“The freshmen coming in are all here for the first summer session. Not only are they getting ahead academically, but they are working hard in the weight room and are getting a head start in terms of what is expected of them on the court. Our guys have been very impressed with the attitudes and abilities of the freshmen.”
What do you do to replace players like Stoudamire and Frye?
“I think the focus this year will be on balance. Last year, we knew that Salim was capable of putting up big numbers and Channing was very consistent for us in terms of scoring and rebounding. It won’t be a case of where will have a player that’s going to be able to do what Salim did or be as consistent as Channing was, but I think the balance that we’ll have will make up for that. I really think this will be a team with five guys averaging in double figures. I think the top reserves also will give us solid scoring as well.”
Are you happy with the team's approach since the end of last year?
“Yes. The loss to Illinois was a huge disappointment. But once we got back, the guys got started right away (in preparation for 2005-06). They just didn’t want to let any time pass. I think that is typical of the type of attitude they’ve displayed during the spring and summer. That’s why I feel really confident that this should be an excellent team.”
The schedule will test this team from the outset. What are your thoughts on opening the season at the EA Sports Maui Invitational?
“Our non-conference schedule is definitely challenging again. If you look at the Maui Invitational field, I don’t think there has ever been a better tournament than that one. Regardless of what happens to us there, I think we will come out of that with a much better awareness of what we need to do in order to get better.”
Aside from the returning starters, who needs to make strong contributions this year?
“With Isaiah (Fox) in his fifth year, we really need to have him step up and give us additional strength in the inside positions. He’s worked very hard since the end of last season. Isaiah has very strong leadership abilities and we are looking for him, as one of the three guys in that senior class, to give us that leadership that we really need.”
