MERSEYSIDE, England - University of Arizona women's golfer Erica Blasberg's victory over Danielle Masters began the five match wins for Team USA to rally to take the first day's lead 5-4 over Great Britain and Ireland at the 33rd Curtis Cup in Merseyside, England.

The Corona, Calif. native, was up by three holes over Masters, before losing the 15th, 16th, 17th holes evening out the competition for Masters to sneak in for a victory. But Blasberg wouldn't give up and sank a 12-foot birdie putt to win the 18th hole, giving her the match.

"I struggled a bit coming in and she took advantage of that," Blasberg commented on the last four holes. "But standing on the 18th tee I told myself, 'Let's get something done here after goofing around for the last three holes.'"

Joining Blasberg, four other members of Team USA were victorious in the afternoon's singles matches, after a dismal morning, which saw no victories for Team USA in the foursomes' outings.

Sunday, Blasberg will team up with the 2004 NCAA individual champion, Sarah Huarte in a foursome outing against Great Britain & Ireland's Emma Duggleby and Shelley McKevitt. Duggleby and McKevitt were victorious against Team USA in Saturday morning's outing defeating Jane Park and Paula Creamer 3 and 2.

Begun in 1932, the Curtis Cup is a biennial match for women's amateur golfers between a team from the United States and one from Great Britain & Ireland. Victory in a match scores one point. When a match goes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each team.
