TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the first day of a two-day event this afternoon. The Wildcats are hosting the Texas Longhorns in the last home dual meet of the season. After the first day of competition the No. 3 Arizona women trail No. 2 Texas 66-44, while the ninth-ranked Arizona men fall behind the third-ranked Texas men 52-39.
The Wildcat women completed the first session with a first place finish in the 400y medley relay touching the wall at 3:42.93. The relay team was made up of junior All-American Beth Botsford, sophomore Jessica Wagner, senior Maria Papadopoulou and fellow senior and All-American Sarah Tolar. Individually for the women freshman Artemis Daphnis was victorious in the 500y free as she hit the wall at 4:51.83.
The Arizona men opened up the meet with a first place finish in the 200y free relay event as they clocked a time of 1:21.27. The Cats' relay squad was compiled of senior All-American Roland Schoeman, sophomore All-American Eric la Fleur, fellow sophomore Byron Jeffers and sophomore All-American Tyler Johnson. The only other first place finish the Arizona men had this afternoon was from Schoeman in the 50y free. Schoeman touched the wall in under 20 seconds at 19.86.
In diving senior All-American Omar Ojeda placed second on the three-meter with 583.50 points. On the women's side sophomore Claire Febvay scored 264.85 points on the one-meter placing second.
The meet will resume tomorrow with the second session beginning at 9 a.m. and the third and final session beginning at 2 p.m. Each session will take place at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on the University of Arizona campus.
