University of Arizona women's basketball player Shawntinice Polk has been named to the 2003 USA Basketball World Championship For Young Women Team, announced USA Basketball over the weekend. The USA Young Women's National Team will compete in the inaugural FIBA World Championship For Young Women in Sibenik, Croatia, on July 25-Aug. 3.
Polk was one of 58 of the nation's top collegians who participated in the USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials held in Colorado Springs over Memorial Day weekend. Just 12 players were selected for the USA Young Women's National Team, which is comprised of athletes 21 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1982).
The USA Young Women's National Team will train July 7-24 in Colorado Springs, New York and Boston before heading to Croatia. The squad was selected by the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team Committee and will be directed by Ohio State head coach Jim Foster.
Polk is the first Wildcat women's basketball player to be named to a USA National Team, adding to the landslide of accolades that she has received this year.
