TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's basketball team has accepted a bid to participate in the 2012 National Invitation Tournament. The Wildcats will open play on Wednesday, March 14, by hosting Bucknell.
Arizona (23-11 overall, 12-6 Pac-12) was given a No. 1 seed and will host eighth-seeded Bucknell (24-9, 12-2 Patriot League) at 6 p.m. PDT in McKale Center. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
"We are excited to be a No. 1 seed in the NIT and play in front of our great fans," said Arizona head coach Sean Miller. "We look forward to the challenge of playing Bucknell, a team that has won a conference championship this season."
Started in 1938, the NIT is the oldest national postseason tournament in college basketball. In that time, the event has grown from a six-team event at New York City's Madison Square Garden to its current 32-team four-region format.
Arizona's appearance in the 2012 event marks the first for the program since 1951 and is the fourth NIT bid in program history (1946, 1950 and 1951). The Wildcats dropped first-round games at Madison Square Garden in each of those appearances.
General public tickets for Wednesday's NIT first round home game against Bucknell are on sale now at arizonawildcats.com. Tickets are $25 each for reserved sections and $15 each for general admission. Seat locations in the reserved sections are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
NIT tickets are not part of the ZonaZoo Red Pass and UA students can purchase general admission tickets at a special student price of $5.
NIT tickets will be available for purchase over the phone (520-621-CATS) and in-person at the McKale Center Ticket Office beginning Monday, March 12, at 9 a.m. PDT. Normal ticket fees apply ($3 for print-at-home, $8 for will call; per account, not per ticket). Parking passes from the 2011-12 regular season will be valid for any NIT home games.
