TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's golf team carded a one-under-par 283 total Saturday to finish in fifth place at the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional.

Arizona collected its eighth consecutive top-five finish at the NCAA Regional by posting a three-round total of 874 (+22). Arizona's final round tally was its lowest of the regional. The Wildcats finished 17 strokes behind tournament-winner Duke, who posted a three-round 857 (+5). No team in the field of 21 finished below par. Georgia (865), Vanderbilt (865) and Auburn (867) rounded out the top-four places.

Individually, two Wildcats finished in the top 20, led by Erica Blasberg. The freshman from Corona, Calif., carded a three-under 68 Saturday to finish in a tie for eighth place overall. Blasberg, the nation's top-ranked individual according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, completed the event with a one-over 214 and collected her eighth top-10 finish in nine events this season.

Freshman Cassandra Kirkland earned her third top-20 finish of 2002-03 by finishing in a tie for 18th place. Kirkland posted a two-over 73 to finish with a three-round tally of 219 (+6). Since joining the regular lineup in February, Kirkland has finished as one of Arizona's top two finishers in three of five events.

Furman's Brandi Jackson captured individual medalist honors with an eight-under 205 total. She shot a five-under-par 66 Saturday to win the event by four strokes.

UA senior Laura Myerscough tallied a final-round 72 to tie for 26th place at 221 (+8) total. Sophomore Miriam Kraschinski tied for 44th place at 226 (+13), while senior Anne Lee tied for 64th place at 229 (+16).

By virtue of its fifth-place finish, Arizona advances to the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, May 20-23 at Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. It is Arizona's eighth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships and 15th in the last 16 seasons. In that span, the Wildcats have two national championships (1996, 2000) and nine top-four finishes.

The 2003 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional was contested in Clemmons, N.C., at Salem Glenn Country Club, a par-71, 6,116-yard facility. The event was hosted by Wake Forest University.
