STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Arizona men's golf team placed four golfers in the top 28 places Monday and stands in third place after 36 holes at the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview.
Scoring proved difficult for all 15 teams in the field, but Arizona handled the conditions as well as anyone in posting a two-round total of 595 (+19) to stand alone in third place. UA's total was just four strokes off the pace of tournament-leader Augusta State at 591. Clemson's 592 placed the Tigers in second place.
Arizona played its most consistent rounds of the tournament, as four of the five team members stand in the top 28 places. Senior Ricky Barnes is tied for ninth place with a 146 (+2) total. He opened the day with an even-par 72, his fourth round at par or better this season. Barnes is three strokes behind tournament leaders Scott Jamieson and Emmett Turner of Augusta State, who lead the field of 75 at 143 (-1).
UA freshman Blaine Peffley stands in a four-way tie for 13th place after carding a 147 (+3) total through 36 holes. Senior Reid Hatley and sophomore Kipp Riehle are tied for 28th place at 151 (+7). Junior Chris Nallen rounds out the Wildcat lineup tied for 47th place at 155 (+11).
The Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview concludes Tuesday at Karsten Creek Golf Course, a par 72, 7,290-yard layout. The 54-hole event is hosted by Oklahoma State.
