TEMPE, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s tennis team (5-10) fell behind early and could not catch up in a 6-1 loss to rival No. 56 Arizona State (9-6) Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. All of the doubles matches were close, but ultimately Arizona State was able to sweep and capture a one-point advantage heading into singles.

Junior Claudio Christen and freshman Ravid Hezi played No. 1 doubles for the Wildcats, dropping a close match 8-6 to Matt Brooklyn and Wes Miller. ASU’s Juan Carlos Rebaza and Nick Hagerty were forced into extra games by Jason Labrosse and Peter Zimmer before prevailing 9-7. At No. 3, juniors Bruno Alcala and Francois VanderMerwe reached a tiebreaker before falling to Sun Devils T.J. Bellama and Murilo Souza.

Arizona State topped Arizona in five of the six singles matches. The lone Wildcat win came from freshman Alex Labrosse at the No. 6 spot. Labrosse defeated ASU’s Murilo Souza in a match decided by a tiebreaker after the players split the first two sets. Labrosse lost the first set 6-1, before bouncing back and pulling out the second 6-4. Labrosse won the ten-point tiebreaker 10-6 to win the match.

Coming into the dual, Arizona State held a national ranking of No. 56. Next week the Wildcats, currently No. 75, will have the opportunity to avenge two losses from earlier this season as they begin conference play by hosting two matches at home. The action begins on March 30 at 1:30 p.m. as Arizona takes on No. 61 Stanford, followed by a noon match against No. 38 Cal-Berkeley the next day. Both matches will be held at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Complex.
