COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Cats used a steady dose of a few Olympians in the 200 free along with a school record holder in the 100 breaststroke to kickstart their Friday morning preliminary session.

The Arizona foursome of Ivan Tolic, Marcus Titus, Bryan O’Connor and Jordan Smith turned in the fifth fastest time in the 200 medley relay, qualifying for tonight’s championship heat. The relay team went out in 1:24.90, just behind Cal in heat two.

In the 400 IM, Jack Brown qualified for the championship heat with a prelim time of 3:43.46. Teammates Andrew Callahan and Austen Thompson did not qualify. At the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif., Brown set the school record in the event with a time of 3:43.22.

A.J. Tipton earned a bid into the consolation heat of the 100 fly with a time of 46.24 swimming out of lane eight in heat five of seven. Tipton is the UA school record holder in the 200 fly. Jordan Slaughter placed 31st with a time of 47.22.

Co-captain Jean Basson, who has been one of Arizona’s mainstays all year, swam yet another good preliminary race to qualify for a championship heat, this time in the 200 free. Basson went out in a time of 1:32.84, good for second overall in prelims. Also gaining entry into the final heat was fellow Olympian Nicolas Nilo who swam a 1:33.45 and placed seventh. Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or just squeaked into the banana heat with a time of 1:34.41. It was the Cats best prelim event so far through two days.

Marcus Titus lowered his UA school record in the 100 breast with a time of 52.29 and won heat three. He finished fifth overall in prelims and will swim tonight in the final heat.

To close Friday prelims, Jake Tapp swam a 46.40 to gain a spot into the consolation heat in the 100 back. Ivan Tolic and Bryan O’Connor did not qualify

Ben Grado is currently competing in the 3-meter event. Yesterday, Grado placed 15th overall in the 1-meter competition.

Overall Arizona finished prelims with four swimmers in championship heats (4 up) and three in consolation heats (3 down). Texas was 7 up, 2 down, Stanford was 4 up, 5 down, Auburn was 7 up, 2 down and Florida was 4 up, 2 down.
