AMES, Iowa ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0) competed in the second day of the Cyclone Classic and came away with a 3-0 victory over Drake University (0-1-0) to win the tournament.
Arizona junior midfielder Mallory Miller scored the first goal of the game in the tenth minute to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Nicole Scheid received the assist on the goal to give her two assists in as many games.
Later in the first half, senior Kamaya Damwijk scored her first goal as a member of the Arizona soccer team to put the Wildcats on top, 2-0. Miller and freshman Kaity Heath assisted on Damwijk’s goal. The assist by Heath is her first point as an Arizona Wildcat.
Arizona then came out in the second half with a 2-0 lead. Junior Nikki David added to the lead by scoring a goal off of assists by Damwijk and Miller.
Head Coach Dan Tobias was pleased with the effort by the Wildcats.
“It was nice to be up 2-0 early in the game” said Tobias. “We were a little lose defensively in the first half. We came out much tighter defensively in the second half and we knew that we couldn’t let our opponent in the game. That resulted in a nice goal by Nikki David early in the second half.”
With the victory, the Wildcats come out of the Cyclone Classic as the undefeated winners of the tournament.
The last time the Wildcats opened the season 2-0 was in 2002 under Head Coach Cathy Klein. The last time the Wildcats began the season 2-0 with two wins on the road was in 1997.
The Wildcats will return home to prepare for the Arizona Invitational. The first game for the Wildcats will take place on Friday, Sep. 3 against UC-Irvine.
