TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona softball team saw its record improve to 7-0 with wins over Texas A&M and Texas State on Friday at the Fiesta Bowl tournament hosted by Arizona State.
In the first game against Texas A&M, sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell won her fifth game of the season, limiting the Aggies to one unearned run. Hollowell struck out nine Aggies in the matchup, holding her ERA at 0.00 in the Cats' 8-1 victory.
Arizona struck early, scoring two in the first inning and adding three in the second. Freshman shortstop Kristie Fox went two-for-four, with a single, a home run and a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Jackie Coburn in the top of the seventh.
Senior Wendy Allen went two-for-two with a pair of walks, a run, and an RBI, improving her batting average to .444 on the season. Sophomore Autumn Champion went three-for-four in the game, with three singles and three runs scored, improving her season batting average to .500.
In the second game of the day versus Texas State, pitcher Wendy Allen held the Bobcats scoreless, striking out 11. Allen's ERA improved to 0.58 in the Wildcats' 5-0 shutout.
Sophomore Shelly Schultz, who is hitting .500 on the season, hit her third home run of the year in the bottom of the third inning, knocking in her 10th RBI and putting the Cats up, 4-0. Champion continued her hot streak, going two-for-four with two singles, and third baseman Jackie Coburn went two-for-two with a walk. Junior Crystal Farley also notched a pair of hits and an RBI.
The Wildcats will continue tournament action on Saturday, versus Dayton at 3:15 p.m. and Texas at 5:15 p.m. at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Tempe.
