Tucson, Ariz. (Nov. 4) -- Playing its third nationally ranked opponent in the last four games, the University of Arizona women's soccer team (5-11-1, 2-6-0 Pac-10) fell to No. 2 Stanford, 5-0, at home on Sunday.

The Wildcats' aggressive play out of the gates gave them some solid early attempts. In the 12th minute, sophomore Shannon Harrelson blocked a clear by a Stanford defender and recovered the deflection to send a shot just left of the near post. Barely one minute later, senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti stepped up for the Cats at the other end of the field by stopping a dead-on shot from the Cardinal's Marcia Wallis.

Monti made several crucial saves early in the first half to keep the Cardinal off the board for the the first 36 minutes. Stanford's Robyn deHay broke the shutout with her header in the 37th minute, then Katie Wayland sent the Cardinal ahead 2-0 with her own header just three minutes later. The Cardinal held that 2-0 edge at halftime.

In the 60th minute, UA freshman forward Candice Wilks took advantage of a bad clear by a Stanford defender and sent a shot from about five yards out, only to see it stopped by Cardinal goalkeeper Carrie Walsh. The Cardinal countered a short while later, with Wayland notching her second goal of the game in the 66th minute.

Arizona had its last solid scoring opportunity in the 68th minute when freshman Cassie Daniels received a free kick from senior Twila Kaufman and fired a bullet from 18 yards that again resulted in a save by Walsh. The Cardinal capped their victory with two more goals, in the 82nd and 86th minutes.

Monti finished the game with five saves and shared time in-goal with sophomore Tamara Klein, who saw the first official action of her collegiate career. Walsh got the shutout for Stanford, collecting three saves.

The Wildcats will wrap up the 2001 season on Friday, Nov. 9, against rival Arizona State at home at 7 p.m.
