LOS ANGELES - Paced by four singles and three doubles victories, ninth-ranked Southern California defeated No. 24 Arizona, 5-2, Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Center in Los Angeles.
The Women of Troy captured the first point of the match sweeping all three doubles contests. At the No. 2 doubles spot, Arizona's duo of junior Brooke Taylor and freshman Debbie Larocque were tripped up by SC's 19th-ranked pair of Maureen Diaz and Melissa Esmero, 8-4.
On the singles side, UA senior Michelle Gough upset ninth-ranked Jewel Peterson of Southern California, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, at the top spot. The contest served as a rematch of the ITA Region VIII championship match in the fall where Peterson got the best of Gough, 6-4, 3-6.
The Wildcats earned their second point of the match at the No. 2 singles position. Arizona freshman Debbie Larocque outlasted Southern California's Anita Loyola, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Arizona returns to action Sunday when it faces UCLA at 11 a.m. PST.
