TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team is in seventh place after the first day of action at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Ala.

Arizona carded rounds of 293 (+13) and 286 (+6) Monday and stand in seventh place after 36 holes with a 579 (+19) total. UA managed only two rounds at par or better on the day, but remains just five strokes out of fourth place.

Texas climbed to the top of the leaderboard, posting rounds of 271 (-9) and 278 (-2), en route to a 549 (-11) tally. The Longhorns are the only squad in the 12-team field that is under par. Clemson (564), host Alabama (565), UNLV (574) and UAB (575) round out the top-five places.

Texas' Jordan Spieth and Clemson's Corbin Mills lead all individuals at six-under 134.

Junior Juan Pablo Hernandez is tied for 11th place at 142 (+2) following the first day of play, registering rounds of 73 and 69. The second-round 69 equals the low round of his career.

Two other Wildcats are separated by one stroke, as sophomore Chris Capo is tied for 19th place at four-over 144, while Erik Oja is tied for 12st place at five-over 145.

Freshman Tucker Wadkins currently is tied for 39th place at nine-over 149, while Brenden Redfern is in 56th place at 16-over 156.

The 54-hole Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow at the Old Overton Club, a par-70, 7,204-yard layout.
