TUCSON -The University of Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team wrapped day one of competition at the Baylor-HEB Invitational in Waco, Texas on Friday. The tournament consists of a 64-player singles bracket and a 32-team doubles draw. All of this weekend's matches are played at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
"I thought we showed signs of improvement today with our doubles," head coach Tad Berkowitz said. "In singles, Andre (Vidaller) played well in his second match and will look to build on that tomorrow."
In the singles play round of 64, sophomore Mario Urquidi fell to Mario Urban of Midwestern State, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Andre Vidaller fell to Soren Goritzka of UT-Arlington, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. In the singles consolation round, Vidaller edged Ricardo Hopker of UT-Pan American, 6-3, 6-3. Felipe Jensen of Laredo Community College topped Urquidi 6-2, 6-4.
In the doubles play round of 32, Urquidi and Vidaller defeated the duo of Germain Degardin and Juan Pablo Farah of UT-Arlington, 8-5. In the round of 16, the Wildcat pair beat Jesse Kiuru and Andy Magee of Maryland, 8-6.
Play at the Baylor-HEB Invitational will resume at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
