Esway’s even-par 72 leads Wildcats
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona sits in a tie for 14th place Friday after the first round of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Wildcats opened the 2005-06 season with a seven-over-par 295 and stands in a tie for 14th place in the field of 20 teams. Arizona trails tournament-leader Texas Tech by 15 strokes entering the second round after the Red Raiders posted a 280 (-8). UNLV (282) and Baylor (287) round out the top three places.
Sophomore Travis Esway led UA with an even-par 72 and stands in a tie for 26th place after the first 18 holes. He was the only member of the lineup to finish the first round at par. Junior Josh Wilks carded a one-over 73 and is tied for 34th place.
Two Wildcats are competing in the field as individuals. Junior Mark Lamb fired a one-under 71 and is tied for 13th place, two strokes ahead of Nathan Tyler, who tallied an opening-round 73 and is tied for 34th place.
The 54-hole William H. Tucker Intercollegiate continues through Saturday at The Championship Course, a par-72, 7,339-yard layout.
