Arizona's Mlakar Loses Women's Tennis Main Singles Final at West Region Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Arizona women's tennis team finished play Monday at the 2002 Omni Hotels West Region Women's Championship. Sophomore Maja Mlakar, the only Wildcat still in competition, was defeated in the final round of main singles play.

Mlakar, who had won all her matches in the first four rounds of competition, fell to USC's Jewel Peterson, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3, in the final round of top-half main singles play. Peterson went on to win the tournament by defeating UCLA's Sara Walker, the winner of the bottom-half singles bracket, 6-2, 6-2.

The Wildcat women's tennis team will rest for a week before heading to either the Fall Desert Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., or the NCAA Indoor Championships, on Nov. 8-10.
