Esler’s 66 provides driving force for leap up leaderboard

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot a 13-under-par 275 Friday and moved into a tie for eighth place at the 2007 NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona’s 13-under day gave the team a 557 (-19) total and a share of eighth place in the 27-team field after 36 holes.  Once again, low scores were the order of the day and the Wildcats were able to take advantage by carding 22 birdies and an eagle en route to its low round of the season to move four places up the leaderboard on this second day of postseason action.  Additionally, Arizona’s 19-under tally after two rounds is the team’s low for the season

UCLA continues to lead the field with a 35-under total of 541.  The Bruins are one stroke ahead of South Carolina (542), while USC (550) and Arizona State (550) round out the top three places.

The Wildcats were led Friday by senior Josh Esler, who collected six birdies and no bogeys on the way to a career-low 66.  The Wauconda, Ill., native stands in a tie for 15th place at seven-under 137.  Arizona State’s Benjamin Alvarado and USC’s Jamie Lovemark share the individual lead at 12-under 132.

Pedro Oriol continues his run of solid play at the regional with a three-under 69 Friday.  The freshman from Madrid, Spain, is tied for 30th place at five-under 139.  Teammate Brian Prouty is one stroke behind at four-under 140 and in a tie for 42nd place.  Prouty has carded a two-under 70 in both rounds to date.

Nathan Tyler is tied for 50th place at three-under 141 after toting a two-under 70 on Friday, while Josh Wilks is tied for 98th place at two-over 146.  Wilks’ second round included an eagle-2 on the par-4 second hole, his 11th hole of the day.

The 54-hole NCAA West Regional concludes tomorrow at Karsten Golf Course, a par 72, 7,057-yard layout.  The top 10 teams and two individuals from this regional qualify for the 2007 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, which is scheduled for May 30-June 2 at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.

Arizona seeks its 21st consecutive berth in the NCAA Championships.  Currently, UA’s streak is the second longest active streak in the nation.
