Cats Fall, 7-0, to Golden Bears

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team dropped their sixth match of Pac-12 play with a 7-0 decision to the California Golden Bears. The Cats were unable to secure a win in both singles and doubles competition.

In doubles play, the Cats fell on courts one and three before calling the match on court two. First to finish was the team of Mario Urquidi and Matt Dunn on court three. The Arizona duo dropped an 8-1 decision to Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton. On court one, Fredrik Ask and Sumeet Shinde teamed up to take on the No. 31-ranked team of Campbell Johnson and Christoffer Konigsfeldt. Ask and Shinde earned five wins but were unable to clinch the match as the fell, 8-5.

In singles action, Shinde wrapped up first on court three. The sophomore from Pune, India fell, 6-2, 6-1, to Johnson. On court six, Naoki Takeda on court five. The freshman from Osoka, Japan dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Mads Engsted. The match marked the fourth point for the Golden Bears and clinched the match in their favor.

On court four, Urquidi wrapped up next in his match against Bayane. Urquidi, a junior from El Paso, Texas, dropped the first set, 6-3, and forced a tiebreak in the second set. The two fought a close second set but Urquidi was edged, 7-6(4). Next to finish was Ask on court two. The junior from Oslo, Norway fought a close battle with Konigsfeldt, but dropped the match, 6-3, 7-5. Last to finish was Kieren Thompson on court one. Thompson dropped a close first set to No. 35-ranked Ben McLachlan, 7-5, but came back to clinch the second, 7-5. The court entered a super-tiebreaker where Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, fell, 10-6.

With the loss Arizona falls to 0-6 in Pac-12 play while California improves to 4-1.

The Cats will be back in action as they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Utah Utes in their final regular season match.
