WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Arizona women's golf team opened play at the 2003 NCAA Championships Tuesday amid horrendous weather conditions and finds itself in a tie for 11th place heading into Wednesday's second round. The Wildcats shot 30-over-par 318 at the Kampen Golf Course.

Southern California holds the lead as it shot 17-over-par 305. Oklahoma State and Ohio State share second place at 21-over-par 309. Individually, Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn is in first place. Nirapathpongporn, the defending NCAA individual champion, shot even-par 72. No golfers in the field shot below par as rain and wind affected play all day long.

Arizona's Erica Blasberg and Anne Lee each shot 6-over-par 78s to position themselves in a tie for 23rd place. The two are the only Wildcats in the top 25 after the first round. Freshman Cassandra Kirkland carded a 7-over-par 79 to stand tied for 36th place.

Senior Laura Myerscough began her final appearance as a Wildcat by posting a round of 11-over-par 83. Sophomore Miriam Kraschinski, who won the NCAA Fall Preview at the Kampen Golf Course in September, is tied for 92nd place at 21-over-par 84.

Play continues Wednesday as Arizona tees off from the No. 10 tee at 12:10 p.m. CDT. The Wildcats aim for the program's third national championship.
