Wildcats Conclude Play At ITA Championships and Begin At Aggie Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. ?- The Arizona men’s tennis players Roger Matalonga and Colin O’Grady wrapped up play today at the 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., as the rest of the Wildcat players started play at the Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas.

 

Matalonga faced off today against Indiana’s Jakub Praibis in the first round of the consolation bracket. After three sets Matalonga fell to Praibis 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Later this afternoon, Matalonga tried to rebound after his single match in doubles action with his doubles partner O’Grady. They faced New Mexico’s David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland. The Lobos were to much as UA fell 9-8 (4).

 

In the action in Texas, the Wildcats had an up and down day against LSU. Doubles went 1-2 and singles went 4-2. Senior Paul Warkentin, junior Tim Mulane, sophomores Nathan Cochrane and Jason Labrosse, and freshmen Bruno Alcala, Mitchell Brown, and Francois VanDermewe all made the trip to the Aggie Invitational.

 

The first doubles match was Warkentin and Alcala against Jason Hazely and Danny Bryan 8-5. In another match, Labrosse and Mulane fell to Colt Gaston and Peter Richman  8-5. However, Brown and VanDermewe were victorious defeating Paul White and Kevin Dessauer 9-7.

 

In singles, the Wildcats had a successful day facing the Tigers. Warkentin, in one of the closest matches of the day, defeated Hazely 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. His teammate Alacala followed with another three set match, as he defeated Richman 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Labrosse was also victorious defeating Bryan 6-2, 7-5. After falling behind early Mulane came from behind to defeated Gaston 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Despite winning in doubles action, VanDermewe did not have the same success in singles. He fell to White in a hard match 6-4, 7-6. To wrap up the day, Cochrane fell to Dessauer, 6-3, 6-0.

 

The Wildcats will continue action tomorrow, at the Aggie Invitational against Texas A&M.
