PHOENIX (Feb. 11, 2001) -- Arizona pitcher Jennie Finch and Jenny Gladding each threw 14-strikeout, 8-0 shutouts Sunday, February 11, to give the No. 3-ranked Wildcat softball team a 6-0 record in Arizona State's Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
Wildcat hitters collected three more home runs in the games to give them 25 for the season in their 10 victories.
Finch opened action Sunday morning with her effort against No. 18 South Carolina, scattering three hits and walking only one batter. She also hit a leadoff homer to open the scoring in the fifth. Lauren Bauer's three-run blast later in the inning extended the lead, and Kim Balkan's three-run blast ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on the eight-run mercy rule.
Gladding, a freshman, struck out the first seven Missouri hitters in the Cats' second game, and she accounted for all but one outs with Ks in the five-inning game. Toni Mascarenas' two-run home run in the fourth gave Arizona the final lead for the mercy rule.
Mascarenas hit five home runs and drove in 15 during the tournament, which saw a team -- Nebraska -- score against Arizona for the only time this season. The Cats beat the Cornhuskers 11-4 on Saturday night.
UA beat Georgia 8-0, Texas 14-0, LSU 10-0, Nebraska 11-4, South Carolina 8-0 and Missouri 8-0 during the tourney.
