TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona swimming program heads to Austin, Texas this weekend for the annual Texas Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by the University of Texas.
Arizona, who last competed in Los Angeles against USC and UCLA, looks to be rested and tapered as they try for NCAA automatic times against top-level teams.
“I know our teams are excited about competing this weekend and will be looking to go very fast,” said head coach Frank Busch.
On the women’s side, a flurry of freshmen comprise the core of the team with veterans Dana Christ and Susana Helms providing leadership to the youthful bunch. Freshman Margo Geer looks to light up the scoreboard this weekend as she tries for cuts in freestyle competitions.
Junior Alyssa Anderson is UA’s stalwart in the distance competitions, competing in the 500 free, 200 fly and 400 individual medley. Returning All-American Ellyn Baumgardner is Arizona’s ace breaststroker and will swim on both medley relays in addition to the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
For the men’s swimmers, they’ll be looking to stay hot after recording some impressive dual meet swims against USC. A few veterans looking to record cuts include NCAA champ Cory Chitwood and All-Americans Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or, A.J. Tipton, Kevin Munsch and Austen Thompson.
The events will follow a traditional invitational schedule with preliminary races swum beginning at 10 a.m. CT and finals starting at 6 p.m. CT.
Twelve teams across both men’s and women’s squads will be in competition with Texas and Arizona as the headliners along with Sydney University in Australia providing some international flair.
