Minneapolis, Minn-- The Arizona softball team opened Region 2 play by defeating Boston University, 4-1 at Cowles Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Freshman Courtney Fossatti and sophomore Leneah Manuma both scored runs in the first inning to help Arizona take an early lead over Boston University.
Finnerty reached base when she doubled to centerfield. Manuma reached base when she was hit by pitch, the 16th time this season. Finnerty then advanced to third when senior Jennie Finch flyed out to center field. Sophomore Mackenzie Vandergeest singled to leftfield to score Finnerty. Freshman Jackie Coburn singled to left field to advance Vandergeest and Manuma. With the bases loaded, Boston University pitcher Robyn Horrick walked Gladding and Manuma scored. Senior Meghan Finnerty ended the inning when she lined out to third base.
Arizona scored two more runs in the third inning when senior Meghan Finnerty hit a two-run home run. The home run marked her first home run of the season and her first RBI.
Boston University scored in the seventh inning when senior Aryn Rangel hit a home run to centerfield, her third of the season.
Gladding struck out 10 batters to improve her record to 20-6. Arizona improves to 49-10. Arizona will play at 7:30 on Friday May 17. The Cats will face the winner of game 5 which is yet to be determined.
