Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller
"First off I have to thank the ZonaZoo. They are so engaged, and give McKale a frenzied atmosphere that not many teams want to see. Both the ZonaZoo and the crowd did a great job at keeping the energy up, and they are what makes McKale such a tough place to play. I know that I am looking forward to getting back here quickly."
On keeping up with Rice's point guards
"One of the keys to the game definitely was keeping up with their point guards. Rice really depends on them, especially at the end of the shot clock, and we wore on them, and just kept wearing on them."
"I really don't want anyone to read too much into it. We are a work in progress, and we are just trying to figure out what match-up works the best at the beginning of the game. Derek had a great game tonight, and played really well, now what he needs to learn is how to do it again come next game. Even Brendan (Lavender), who didn't make a field goal tonight, was a big help to us on defense. There will be some nights where some guys get more playing time than others."
"Kyryl definitely didn't play his best tonight. Now, what he needs to do is pick himself up and be back into form for the next game."
On next week in Maui
"It is very easy to play defense here, and going to Maui, we have to prove that we can play good defense on the road. We are going to be going up against some quality teams next week, and it's going to be a big learning experience for us. Wisconsin is a very good, physical team. They play a half court game and are great at blocking out. What we are going to have to understand is that it's going to be very different from other games, and we just have to stick with it, and do what we do. It's going to be a grueling three days, especially with the fact that even if we lose, we will be up and going the next day against a team with the same result. If we win, we will face a team just as excited as we are."
On getting to the basket and the free throw line
"We definitely need to work on driving to the basket, and as a team we need to work on getting to the free throw line. We didn't get there much tonight, but I did notice some improvement. We still don't attack the basket enough, and that is something we will be focusing on in practice."
Arizona Player Quotes
On his first start:
"I just try to come out and play hard and do what coach wants."
On playing forward:
"I'm just getting used to the offense right now. I just started playing that position in practice."
On what he brings to the team:
"I'm versatile. I can play the four or the five. I pass a little bit. I do a little bit of everything."
On offensive struggles tonight:
"It's not our offense, it's on our defense. We just have to learn to lock up for 40 minutes."
On playing Wisconsin in Maui:
"We know Wisconsin plays slow. They have a lot of big guys. You just never want to lose the first game."
On the team:
"This game when going got tough, coach called a timeout. We know we got to lock down. We just have to learn to stay tough in the second half."
On the energy:
"I mean good teams are going to make runs. After coach called a timeout we brought our defense back after that. We just have to finish off practice. Sometimes we die down. Coach is trying to put it in our heads to finish practice."
"I feel like I'm getting better at it. I just have to go out there and practice and get better on defense everyday."
On leaving for Maui:
"We got to get up and go to Maui. It's a smart move to go early and get used to the time change."
On what to do to win on the road:
"Really, we just have to stay focused. We have to be ready to play. It starts when you wake up in the morning. You have to stay focused and be ready to play."
