Both the Wildcat varsity and junior varsity will be in action

 

TUCSON, Ariz. + The University of Arizona men’s golf team opens the 2005-06 season with a pair of events beginning Monday.

 

The Wildcat junior varsity will open the year in Bakersfield, Calif., at the Elco, Inc., Intercollegiate.  The 15-team event, which is hosted by Cal State Bakersfield, is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at Bakersfield Country Club, a par-72, 6,819-yard layout.  Tee times begin at 8 a.m. PDT each day with 36 holes scheduled for Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

 

Joining the Wildcats in the field is the University of British Columbia, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, The Master’s College, Holy Names College, Point Loma Nazarene, Washburn.  Several teams will play with both an “A” and “B” team, bringing the field to 15.

 

The following players are scheduled to compete for the Arizona junior varsity:  junior Brett Carter, sophomore Trey Denton, freshman Ben Fox, freshman Nicholas Park and sophomore Billy Whalen.

The UA varsity opens play, Sept. 16-17, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.  Hosted by the University of New Mexico, the tournament will be held at The Championship Course, a par-72, 7,350-yard layout.  Tee times are to be announced with 36 holes scheduled for Friday and 18 for Saturday.  Participating teams include Air Force, Arizona, Baylor, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Iowa State, New Mexico, New Mexico JV, New Mexico State, Nevada-Reno, Northwestern, San Diego State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.

 

The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate is the nation’s second-oldest college golf tournament.  Arizona enters the 2005 event as the defending champion after its two-stroke victory in Albuquerque last year.  The Wildcats posted a nine-under 855 total to earn the win. 

 

Four of the players scheduled to make up the Arizona lineup next week also competed for the victorious Wildcats last season.  The probable lineup is as follows: junior Josh Esler, sophomore Travis Esway, junior Mark Lamb, junior Henry Liaw, junior Brian Prouty, junior Nathan Tyler, and junior Josh Wilks.
