TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team is in third place Sunday after the opening round of the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch in San Antonio, Texas.
Arizona posted its best round of the fall to date to rise to third place in the 15-team field with a seven-under 281 total. On the day, UA carded five rounds at par or better today, which is nearly as many (7) as the team totaled in the first two events this fall.
New Mexico leads the 54-hole event with a 14-under 274 tally, five shots ahead of Houston. Baylor (283) and Texas State (284) round out the top-five teams.
New Mexico's John Catlin shot an opening-round 64 (-8) to claim the individual lead.
Leading the way for the Wildcats Sunday was sophomore Erik Oja, who posted a season-low 68 (-4) and is tied for fourth place individually. It was the second-lowest round of his career and the lowest round by a Wildcat in relation to par this season.
Sophomore Chris Capo is tied for 14th place after shooting a two-under 70, and he is one stroke ahead of teammates Juan Pablo Hernandez and Trent Redfern, who each carded one-under 71 tallies and are tied for 17th place. Redfern is competing in this event as an individual,
The Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch continues through Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Course, a par-72, 7,253-yard layout.
