Eight pars and three birdies help him clinch 6 and 5 victory
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Former University of Arizona men's golfer Chris Nallen advanced to the semifinals of match play at the 2004 United States Amateur Championship with a 6 and 5 victory Friday at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
A native of Hackettstown, N.J., Nallen defeated Dayton Rose of Midwest City, Okla, 6 and 5, to advance to the Saturday’s semifinal. Seeded 10th after stroke play, Nallen got off to another strong start and rolled to victory. He carded pars on the opening six holes and by the time Nallen collected his first birdie of the day on no. 7, he had a 4-up lead. He stretched the lead to as many as 6-up with a par and two birdies on holes 10-12, and clinched the match with a halve on the 13th hole.
Nallen will meet sixth-seed Luke List of Ringgold, Ga., in tomorrow’s semifinal. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. EDT.
