TUCSON - No. 1 Arizona vs. No. 2 UCLA -- Pac-10 Softball

For the second consecutive game, UA first baseman Shelly Schultz had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, propelling top-ranked Arizona to 5-4 victory over No. 2 UCLA in a Pac-10 softball game halted for more than an hour by a rainstorm.

Kristie Fox led off the UA half of the frame with a single off the glove of UCLA third baseman Andrea Duran. Jackie Coburn laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe when the second baseman dropped the ball at first, putting runners at the corners. Schultz then drilled a shot down the left field line to bring in Fox with the winning run.

UCLA's Keira Goerl threw five innings of no-hit ball before the Wildcats' bats came to life. Samantha Quintero and Allyson Von Liechtenstein led off with singles, then leadoff hitter Caitlin Lowe blasted a home run to right field to tie the game at 4-4.

The rally might have been bigger was thwarted by some risky baserunning. After Autumn Champion followed Lowe's home run with a bunt single, Wendy Allen sacrificed her to second, but she was thrown out at third trying to advance on the play at first, giving UCLA a nice double play. Goerl then struck out Mackenzie Vandergeest.

The Bruins took the lead in the top of the first. Andrea Duran drew a one-out walk off Alicia Hollowell, and Stephanie Ramos doubled. UA intentionally walked Claire Sua to load the bases, but Hollowell hit Jode Legaspi with a pitch to force in a run. She struck out Emliy Zaplatosch and got Lisa Dodd to foul out to prevent further scoring.

The Cats tied the game without a hit in the fourth inning. Lowe led off with a walk and after Autumn Champion struck out, stole second. She moved to third on a wild pitch, and with two outs scored on another wild pitch by UCLA's Goerl.

That score stood up until the first pitch by Hollowell in the fifth, when Duran turned on the offering and knocked it over the fence in left center to make it 2-1 Bruins. Stephanie Ramos followed that with a sharp single to center, and Sua hit a deep liner over the batter's eye in center for another home run to make it 4-1.

The game, which started at 1 p.m., was halted in the top of the second with two out and the count 3-2 to Duran. About 70 minutes later after the field was covered and uncovered following a downpour, Duran struck out.

Hollowell remained unbeaten at 25-0. The Wildcats improved to 38-1 and 2-0 in league play, while the Bruins dropped to 27-3 and 0-2. Goerl dropped to 15-2 on the year, both losses coming to UA this weekend.
