FULLERTON, Calif. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, to wrap up its non-conference schedule. CS Fullerton got out to an early lead but the Wildcats were able to score with ten seconds remaining in the first half to even the game. Arizona scored again at the 54:54 minute mark to take the lead.

“Fullerton is a very good team and they did great job getting that first goal,” said Head Coach Dan Tobais. “In the first half, Fullerton had a lot more run of play and kept the ball more. I thought we showed great character by coming back and getting goal with ten seconds left in first half. It got some nice momentum going for us.”

Fullerton’s Lauryn Welch gave the Titans an early 1-0 lead with her goal at the 4:07 mark. Arizona finally got its offense going again at the 44:50 mark with freshman Laura Huylebroeck first goal of the season. She netted the goal unassisted off a loose ball. The Wildcats and Titans went into the half tied 1-1.

In the second period, freshman Jacqueline Broussard broke the 1-1 tie with her first goal of the season. Broussard’s goal came off a cross from teammate Jasmine Namdar.

“We had talked about getting more production from the young attacking players,” explained Tobias. “It is no coincidence that Laura and Jacqueline both scored their first goals of the season. We did a better job of taking care of ball in second half. We did a good job of managing game and we showed a lot of composure in last ten minutes. Overall, we had a better effort, better performance and we got good result. It is a good building block going into Pac-10 play.”

The offensive attack was nearly equal for both teams. Arizona recorded 11 shots while CS Fullerton notched ten. The Wildcats were more efficient on offense, however, netting nine shots on goal while the Titans had five. Chelsea McIntyre allowed one goal and made four saves while in goal for the Wildcats.

Arizona, which improved to 7-4 on the season, will open Pac-10 play at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Oregon.
