In the first round they faced Duke’s Peter Rodriguez and Chris Brown. The Arizona pair, ranked 31st, defeated Rodriguez and Brown, 8-3. In the quarterfinals they beat Michael Kotka and Matt Brown from Baylor, 8-4.
Their toughest test came in the semifinals where they faced the 21st-ranked Rice pair, Robert Searle and Ben Harknett. They won this closely contested match, 9-8. This set up a finals match against UCLA’s Aaron Yovan and Chris Surapol. Matalonga and Andrus won the match 8-3. Assistant coach Cory Hubbard felt the pair did a great job at the tournament.
“It was a great effort to beat four quality teams. This is a great achievement for the guys and for our program to gain some national recognition. They continued to get better and played their best match in the finals against UCLA. They just outcompeted the other teams and played with more intensity and desire,” said Hubbard.
Both Matalonga and Andrus also competed in the singles bracket. Each won the respective first match before falling in the second round.
The team will compete next in the ITA regionals beginning with the qualifying round October 19th in Malibu, Calif.
