TUCSON, Ariz.- The sixth-ranked Arizona volleyball team started off the 2001 season in winning fashion by defeating South Florida 3-0 in its opening match. The Wildcats, playing at the SunTrust Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., picked up their seventh opening match win in 10 tries under head coach David Rubio. Games scores were 30-26, 30-19, 30-23.
The new rally scoring format, implemented into play for the 2001 season, had little effect on the Wildcat offense as UA hit an impressive .392 for the match. Junior Lisa Rutledge led all players with 18 kills on 30 swings with only four errors for a .467 attack percentage. Classmate Stefani Saragosa was the only other Wildcat to tally double figure kills with a nearly perfect 11 kills on 12 attempts and zero errors for a .917 hitting percentage.
All-American setter Dana Burkholder dished out 37 assists in the match and chipped in with nine kills and eight digs. Senior Jill Talbot recorded an eight kill, eight assist match and also led all players with five total blocks. Junior Shannon Torregrosa finished with a match high 10 digs, three solo blocks and four service aces.
The Cats return to action later this afternoon with a 5:30 pm ET match against Marshall.
