FULLERTON, Calif. ?- Sophomore pitcher Taryne Mowatt (11-1) tossed her first career no-hitter in No. 1 Arizona’s, 7-0, tournament-opening victory over UNLV.  UA continues play in the Judi Garman Classic throughout the weekend.

With the win UA improves to 24-1.

Mowatt struck out 15 of the 22 batters she faced, facing only one batter over the minimum.  The only Rebel batter to reach base was Kendall Fearn, off of a UA fielding error.

The trio of All-American hitters at the top of Arizona’s lineup came up with three hits to start the game, but the UA offense scored only one run in the first inning.

UA didn’t get another run on the board until the top of the fourth, when Laine Roth led off with a single.  Sam Banister executed a successful sacrifice bunt, moving Roth to second.  Two batters later, Caitlin Lowe singled Roth in for UA’s second run of the game.

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats jumped on Rebel pitcher Shannon Crisp for five runs on five hits.  After Kristie Fox reached on a fielder’s choice, the chaos started when Chelsie Mesa laid down a drag bunt.  UNLV tried to throw Fox out at second, but was too late and the throw was too wide.  The errant throw reached the center field wall, scoring Fox from first and placing Mesa on third.  Next, Jenae Leles brought Mesa in on a sac fly to left.

With two runs in and one out, Arizona rallied for another three runs.  Roth and Banister strung together a pair of singles and Callista Balko walked to load the bases.  Then, Taryne Mowatt, hitting for only the 10th time in her career smacked a ball to right field for a two-RBI single.  The Wildcats tacked on one more run, on an RBI fielder’s choice by Autumn Champion.

Up next: Arizona next plays No. 18 Texas A&M UA’s second game of pool play in the Judi Garman Classic.  The Wildcats will wrap-up pool play against Cal State Northridge on Friday, 4 p.m. (PST).

Game Notes:

-         Caitlin Lowe extended her team-leading 12-game hit streak.  That mark is the longest for any UA player this season.

-         Caitlin Lowe now has 17 multi-hit games.

-         UA totaled more than 10 hits for the sixth time in seven games.
