Christen Pulls Major Upset in Midland

MIDLAND, Texas ?- Juniors Bruno Alcala and Claudio Christen competed this weekend in the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland, Texas. The tournament was a success for the Wildcats, with Alcala reaching the second round and Christen making it through to the quarterfinals after eliminating the tournament’s number one seed.


In the first round, Alcala defeated Baylor sophomore David Galic 6-1, 6-3. Alcala was unable to maintain his strong play in the second round as he fell to Marc Spicijaric of Illinois in a close match 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Spicijaric went on to reach the final round of the tournament.


In his first match of the tournament, Christen defeated Gonzalo Bienzabos from the University of Texas at Arlington 6-3, 6-1. In the round of sixteen, Christen was matched up against Michal Kokta of Baylor. Despite being the underdog against the tournament’s No.1 seed, Christen was able to pull out the match 6-3, 6-1. In the quarterfinal’s, Christen fell to No. 5 seed Blake Strode of Arkansas 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.


The tournament field featured players from sixteen of the nation’s top men’s tennis teams, including Baylor, Duke, Pepperdine, Texas, and UCLA.


Up next for the Wildcats is the ITA West Regional. The tournament begins on Oct. 19 and will be held in Malibu, Calif. Players representing the team are: Alcala, Christen, Alex Labrosse, Jason Labrosse, Francois VanderMerwe, and Peter Zimmer.
