LONG BEACH, Calif. – On night two of the Men’s Pac-10 Championships at the Belmont Olympic Plaza, the Wildcats placed five swimmers into championship heats and currently sit in third place with 222 points.
In the 500 free, Jean Basson was runner-up in the “B” heat with a time of 4:19.57. Teammate Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or was seventh in the heat at 4:24.79. Basson’s seed time was topped by just one swimmer on Thursday night—Stanford’s David Mosko who won the “A” heat.
The 200 individual medley saw four Wildcats qualify for the final heat. Jack Brown placed third overall with a time of 1:45.53 followed by Cory Chitwood in fifth (1:47.01), Clark Burckle in sixth (1:47.10) and freshman Carl Mickelson in seventh (1:47.17).
Sophomore Adam Small qualified for the final heat in the 50 freestyle. Small, a Tempe, Ariz. product, was sixth overall with a time of 19.79. Cal’s Nathan Adrian, arguably the fastest American, won the overall race in 19.20.
Last week in diving events, Ben Grado grabbed 16 points for the Cats by finishing third overall in the 1-meter event with a score of 391.75.
Tomorrow’s events include the 400 I.M., 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.
