MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

Four Arizona players posted singles wins and a doubles team advanced to the semifinals in the first day of the Memphis Invitational on Friday at The Racquet Club in Memphis, Tenn.

Senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) and sophomore Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) paired up to defeat Alabama’s Lindsey and Zabor in the first round and Memphis’ Welcher and Hibberd to advance to the semifinals.

Sophomore Susan McRann (Dublin, Ireland) and freshman Hailey Johnson (San Diego,Calif.) fell in a tight 9-8 match to Alabama’s McLane and Foehse in the quarterfinals.

“I was really pleased with today's effort,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “Tash and Kim did very well in doubles and I'm happy to see them in the semifinals. Hailey and Susan got a slow start in theirs, but were very good once they got going. After being down 6-3, they evened it out to a tie-breaker and created some chances, so that was great.”

In singles, three Wildcat players earned wins over Memphis, as Marks defeated  Stefanie Mikesz in three sets, Stubbe defeated Mariya Slupska and McRann defeated Andrea Arques-Garcia 6-0, 6-0.

Junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) also advanced with her win over Tulsa’s Ewa Szatkowska in straight sets.

Senior Debora Castany (Barcelona, Spain) and Johnson fell in singles, but will continue with consolation play on Saturday.

“Singles went well too,” Maes said. “Kudos to Tash and Lacey for battling hard in spite of playing hurt. I just love their resilience. Kim was also amazing after a long break due to injury. It feels good to have her back. Susan played flawlessly and that was fun to watch. Both Debora and Hailey lost, but I feel they are learning a lot and will do better tomorrow.”

The Wildcats will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 5 to continue tournament action.
