TUCSON--Freshman Brittany Berger had her first start as a Wildcat, along with her first goal, Friday in Arizona's 2-1 loss to Loyola Marymount University.
On the first shot of the night, in the third minute, Berger took a pass from red shirt junior Alex Davis, and sunk shot past Lions goalie Alyssa Clark, putting the Wildcats up 1-0.
This would be the Wildcats' only goal, as the Lions equalized in the sixth minute, and scored the game winner in the 53rd.
In the 42nd minute of the game, senior Jasmine Namdar got tangled with LMU's Erin Rementer, who was given a red card for unsportsmanlike actions, and ejected from the game along with Arizona's Mackie Mutz, who retaliated in defense of her teammate. Mutz will be unavailable for Friday's game against UCLA, but will be able to suit up for Sunday's match against USC.
"We played very well tonight." Said head coach Dan Tobias. Brittany did great getting a goal on the first shot of the night, along with this being her first start. Ashley (Jett) did great in the goal tonight. She had a great week of training and I'm proud of her for staying calm and composed in the net. Our goal for tonight was to play our best soccer yet, and I think that we did that, despite losing. I think we're in a good play for starting Pac-10 play next week."
Next weekend, the Wildcats will be heading out to California to take on UCLA and USC to start off the conference season. The match against UCLA, on October 9th will start at 7 pm, and the match against USC, on October 11th will start at 1pm.
