TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's basketball team kicked off the 2000-2001 season with its annual Red-Blue scrimmage Monday night, where the Blue team defeated the Red team, 83-78.

The Blue team came out ready to play tonight as they went on a 10-2 run four minutes into the first half. The Red team then came within three points with 4:14 to go in the half, but the Blue team pulled ahead to end the half on a 12-2 run to take a 51-39 lead into the break.

"I think we showed some periods of smart play, and we had some lulls," said head coach Joan Bonvincini. "This is something we will build on. We need to pull it all together. We are very young and we showed that."

Former Wildcat Felicity Willis participated as a practice player on the Blue squad and led all scorers with 23 points. Now a student assistant coach for the UA, Willis was 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-5 from the three point line.

The Red team had four players in double figures. Senior guard Reshea Bristol led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Aimee Grzyb had 14 points, junior Elizabeth Pickney had 13 points and freshman Veranda James had 10 points.

"I think Aimee (freshman guard Aimee Grzyb) had a very good game for her first game, she had some crucial threes. She's pretty good," Bonvincini said. "We need to get the ball to Liz (junior forward Elizabeth Pickney) more, especially with the kind of player Liz is. That's part of playing together."

Arizona faces the Love and Basketball team on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. This will be the first of two exhibition games for the Wildcats before opening up the regular season with Brigham Young at home on Saturday, Nov. 18.

    Head Coach Joan Bonvicini Quotes:

"At times, we looked good and at times we didn't look good. You saw us look good tonight and we looked bad. I thought our defensive intensity needed to be picked up. Our rebounding needed to be better."

"I think Aimee (freshman guard Aimee Grzyb) had a very good game for her first game, she had some crucial threes. She's pretty good. We need to get the ball to Liz (Junior forward Elizabeth Pickney) more, especially with the kind of player Liz is. That's part of playing together."

"I think they (the red team) were tired of looking at that score. I was. They made a real good effort. This will make us better."

"I think we showed some periods of smart play and we had some lulls. This is something we will build on. We need to put it all together. We are very young and we showed that."
