PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Severe rain caused the cancellation of the third and final round of the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge Wednesday at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Tournament officials declared second-round results would stand as final, meaning Arizona finishes in third place.

The Wildcats' 36-hole total of 606 (+38) left them eight strokes behind tournament champion Pepperdine (598, +30) after the second and final round. Southern California took second place with a two-round score of 603 (+35).

The third-place finish is Arizona's fourth top-three finish in five events in the 2002-03 season. Dating to March 2002, the Wildcat women's golf program has finished in the top five in each of its last nine events. Included in that stretch are the 2002 Pac-10 Championship, a runner-up finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships and a win at the 2002 NCAA Fall Preview.

"The team was feeling confident after our gutsy performance yesterday in that poor weather, so we were a little disappointed we couldn't play today," head coach Greg Allen said. "But there was no way the tournament could go on because they had gotten so much rain."

Freshman Erica Blasberg, top-rated in the Golfweek/Sagrin Performance Index, earned her third consecutive top-three finish as she was tied for second place after 36 holes. The freshman from Corona, Calif., shared second place with Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA at 3-over-par 145. The duo closed the tournament just one stroke behind individual medalist Katherine Hull of Pepperdine. Hull carded a 2-over-par 144 in the event's two rounds.

Other finishers for the Wildcats included Miriam Kraschinski (152, +10), who notched her third top-15 performance of the 2002-03 season as she tied for 13th place. Senior Laura Myerscough tied for 22nd place with a two-round score of 12-over-par 154. Anne Lee, from nearby Northridge, Calif., shared 35th place with six other golfers at 15-over-par 157. Completing the Arizona lineup was Julia Kraschinski who tied for 80th place with a score of 27-over-par 169.

Complete field results are available at Golfstat.com.

The top-rated Wildcats return home to Tucson, where they will play host to the next event on the schedule. The Wildcat Invitational will be held Feb. 24-26 at Arizona National Golf Club at Sabino Springs.
