TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona bounced back from a sluggish 36 holes of medal play on Sunday and won its opening match at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships, but dropped its afternoon match on a tiebreaker at the Ginn Reunion Resort on Monday.

A well-played second match by both teams went down to the final hole as Amanda Wilson and Kirby Dreher were locked in a tight battle. Neither player led by more than two holes throughout the match, but Dreher ended up with the late advantage after taking a lead on the 7th hole.

The match remained 1-up for Dreher with one hole to play with the overall team match tied at 2 points apiece. With daylight dwindling, the two coaches went through the tiebreaker scenario and realized that even if Wilson were to win the hole and halve the match, Kent State would win the tiebreaker by one hole. In sporting fashion, head coach Shelly Haywood had Wilson concede the match to speed up the final day of play and prevent finishing in the morning.

In the morning round, the Wildcats used strong performances from the Mexican duo of Alejandra Llaneza and Margarita Ramos to set the tone for their victory. Llaneza won each of the first two holes and never led by less than two holes on the way to the dominating win. Ramos briefly fell behind early after losing the 13th hole, but she battled back to win five straight holes starting at #15.

Amanda Wilson and Brittany Benvenuto each were throw into a dogfight as their matches went down to the wire. Wilson had the easier time of the two, taking a 1-up lead on the 7th hole after starting on the 13th before winning the final hole to cement her win. Benvenuto, on the other hand, fell behind on hole four and stayed 1-down until the 11th hole, her last, and recorded a par to win the hole by two shots to take one-half point.

Ramos and Llaneza remained perfect with identical 3 and 2 wins against Kent State in the afternoon session. Ramos built a four-hole advantage with wins on both the 1st and 2nd holes before cruising in for the win. Llaneza saw her lead come and go early on, but she took control on the 2nd hole, then captured the 4th to build a lead she would never relinquish.
