Manon Gidali paced the Arizona Wildcat women's golf team to its first win of the spring season and its third win in 2012-13 at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Wednesday. Hosted by the University of Hawaii, the two-day, three-round event was held at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course (par 72, 6,139 yards) in Kane'ohe, O'ahu.
With a 25-stroke lead on the field, No. 7 Arizona won the team race with rounds of 289, 293 and 293 for a score of 875 (+11), the Cats' lowest three-round tournament showing this season. No. 45 Ohio State finished second with a 900 (+36) and Gonzaga rounded out the top three with a 902 (+38).
"It was a great week for our team," head coach Laura Ianello said. "The team fought hard with Kendall (Prince) unable to tee it up (because of illness). We have been working hard in practice and it's paying off. Manon (Gidali) had her third victory and it's good to see her confidence come back."
"Andrea (Vilarasau) and Patricia (Garcia) had amazing short games and their play helped us win," Ianello added. "It was also Patricia's first time in the lineup and she finished third. She's a great addition. Janie (Jackson) struggled today but helped us big yesterday. We'll build on this and be looking for a win in San Diego in two weeks."
Gidali, ranked No. 37 by golfstat.com, won the individual medal with rounds of 71, 70 and 72, all at or below par. With a score of 213 (-3), she put together her best tournament of the season and the second-best three rounds of her career. Sophomore Patricia Garcia finished tied for third. She fired rounds of 73, 72 and 72 for a score of 217 (+1) in her first tournament in the Wildcat lineup.
Sophomore Andrea Vilarasau finished tied for sixth, the highest placing in her collegiate career. She carded rounds of 72, 75 and 73 for a score of 220 (+4). No. 88 freshman Janie Jackson finished 11th with a score of 225 (+9). She collected rounds of 73, 76 and 76. Playing as an individual, freshman Anna Kim finished in a five-way tie for 56th. She scored a 240 (+24) with rounds of 81, 80 and 79.
The Cats will play next at the San Diego State Farms Invitational, March 31-April 2, in San Diego, Calif.
