TUCSON, Ariz. -

No. 75 Arizona women's tennis (9-13, 1-8 Pac-12) dropped its last home match of the season, 6-1, to No. 11 California (13-5, 8-1 Pac-12) on Saturday afternoon.

"We had great momentum in doubles," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "We really had to play well to get that point."

Arizona started the match with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles round. The last time that Arizona recorded the doubles point against California was in 2005 when the Golden Bears hosted the Wildcats. California also won the match 6-1 in 2005.

Arizona gained the advantage to take the doubles point when UA juniors Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shutout No. 29 Susanyi and Fabikova, 8-0, at the No. 2 spot.

Arizona junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) paired up at the No. 1 doubles spot and upset No. 23 Chi and Schutting, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for Arizona.

Arizona almost swept the doubles round when Arizona junior Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) forced a tiebreaker against Davis and Duranteau at the No. 3 spot, but the California pair won the tiebreaker to prevent an Arizona sweep.

"We weren't able to carry momentum into the singles," Maes said. "But Cal was really solid and didn't give us too many chances. We could have had a better showing in singles."

Arizona's 1-0 lead was short-lived in singles play as California went on to record victories at the No. 6, 4, 3 and 2 spots in straight sets.

Arizona finished the season with a 7-5 record at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

"We will learn from this and take the experience into our match with ASU next week," Maes said.

Up Next: Arizona will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday, April 20, to compete in the Territorial Cup against rival, Arizona State, for the last match of the regular season. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m. MST.
