Arizona Tops NFCA Poll

STARKVILLE, Miss. ?- The defending NCAA Champion Arizona Wildcats will begin the 2007 season where they left off in 2006 ?- ranked No. 1 in the NFCA Top 25.

 

Arizona received 23 of 30 first-place votes to earn top billing entering their 2007 campaign. 

 

The Wildcats are followed by Tennessee, which at No. 2 in the poll, received seven first-place votes. 

 

UA is joined by five other Pac-10 teams in the top 10, with a seventh squad from the Conference of Champions coming in at No. 12.  UCLA will enter the year ranked third, with Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford and Cal beginning the season ranked fifth, sixth, eighth and tenth, respectively.

 

In addition to the 18 contests UA will play against the ranked Pac-10 squads, the Wildcats also have a total of eight dates with No. 4 Northwestern, No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 18 Baylor. 

 

Arizona has now been ranked No. 1 in the NFCA poll for at least part of the season every year since 1991.

 

In years following national championships, Arizona has won five of six Pac-10 titles.  The only year UA failed to defend its national championship by winning the Conference was 2002.  Additionally, UA has reached the national title game in each year following a national championship.

 

Arizona begins its title defense on Feb. 9 in Tempe, Ariz., against Ohio State as part of the Kajikawa Classic.
