TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona golfers Natalie Gulbis and Ricky Barnes led Team USA to victory Thursday in the 26th annual FUJI XEROX U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship.

Gulbis, who just completed her freshman season at Arizona, led the U.S. women to wins in three of four matches on Thursday to all but clinch the match. Gulbis shot a 73 (+1) in the final round to defeat Japan's Mika Saito by five strokes. U.S. men's team member Anthony Arvidson settled the match with a 10-stroke victory over Yoshiaki Kimura to make the final score U.S.A. 37, Japan 23.

Gulbis, a native of Sacramento, Calif., was named Women's Most Valuable Player after totaling 218 strokes (72-73-73) over the three rounds of play. MVP honors are presented to the men's and women's player with the low stroke total for the three-round event. She posted a spotless 3-0 record in the international competition.

"It's a great honor to be named MVP," said Gulbis. "I struck the ball really well and I hit a lot of greens and fairways. The whole experience was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing it again."

Barnes helped lead the U.S. charge in the second round, giving the squad a lead it would not relinquish. After finishing Monday's first round with the teams tied at six, Barnes shot a second-round 73 (+1) and earned two points with a one-stroke victory over Naomi Ohta. It was one six wins for the U.S. men and put the lead at 23-13.

Barnes, who averaged 72.33 strokes (73-73-71) over three rounds of play, posted a 1-2 record in the competition.

The U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championships featured eight men and four women in a Walker Cup-style event. The United States has won the last seven U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championships and leads the overall series, 19-6. It has taken place each year since 1975, except 1991. The competition was held at the Verde Sano Country Club in Sano, Tochigi, Japan.
