SAN DIEGO - The University of Arizona men's tennis freshman Mario Urquidi fell in a three-set heartbreaker and sophomore Frank Chen dropped a two set singles match on the final day of the San Diego State University Fall Invitational in San Diego, Calif. at the Aztec Tennis Center.

 

"The guys played a lot of tennis this weekend," said assistant coach Tom Lloyd.  "There was a lot of stuff learned and we have a great idea of what to work on. All in all it was a very successful weekend for these guys."

 

In Bracket A/B of singles competition, Urquidi faced Sam Ling of the University of California, San Diego and fell in a close 7-6 (7) first set. The freshman bounced back in the second set to claim a 6-3 win, but was edged out by Ling in the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-8). Urquidi finished with a 0-5 singles match record this weekend, but finished with a 1-1 record in doubles competition with David Humphreys.

 

Chen squared off against Junya Yoshida of UCSD in Bracket C/D of singles action, where he was defeated in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The sophomore finished the weekend with a 2-2 singles record.  On Friday, Chen outlasted Peder Steen of the University of San Francisco in the second round 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 to advance to the third round. On Saturday, Chen fell to Jose Sierra Short of SDSU 6-2, 6-2, but responded with a win over Emilio Mora of the University of San Diego 2-6, 6-4, 10-6. Chen finished 2-1 in doubles competition with Tom Wolff including an 8-2 backdraw championship win against Sean Peterson and Raineir Matias of UC Riverside.

 

The other three Wildcats, senior Jay Goldman, Humphreys and Wolff all competed in the three day event.

 

In his first fall tournament of the year, Goldman finished with a 1-1 singles record. The senior topped Stephen Stage of UC Irvine 6-1, 6-4 on Friday in the second round, but fell to Clarke Spinsoa of USD 7-5, 6-4 on Saturday in the third round.

 

Wolff finished 2-2 over the span of the weekend. In his first action as a Wildcat, the Tucson native topped Vincent Nguyen of UCSD 6-3, 7-5 in the first round, but fell to Michael Grant of USC 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. On Saturday in the consolation round, Wolff defeated Armaun Emami of UCSD 6-3, 6-2 and then fell to German Bahri of USF 7-5, 6-0.  

 

Humphreys wrapped up his play at the invitational with a 1-2 singles record. On the first day of competition, the Reno, Nev. native dropped his first match to Jose Giger of USC 6-3, 6-4. On Saturday, Humphreys bounced back and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Steen of USF in the consolation bracket. In his final match of the day, Humphreys fell in a narrow 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 tiebreaker to Devon Sousa of UCSD.   

 

The Wildcats will next be in action at the ITA West Regional Championships beginning Oct. 21 in Irvine, Calif.
